Simple, Creamy Grits

If you’ve never had a bowl of hot, creamy grits with a cup of black coffee, you are in for a real treat.  This Southern comfort food makes any morning seem brighter.  This recipe is one I come back to again and again.  It’s pretty simple, but you can certainly adapt it.  I often add cheese at the end, but you can also experiment with adding hot sauce, eggs, onions–whatever suits your fancy.


Simple, Creamy Grits

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 2/3 cup broth (I typically use vegetable, but you could also use chicken)
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1 cup quick grits

Combine milk, broth, and water in your favorite pot over high heat.  Bring to a boil.  When boiling, add butter, salt, and pepper.  Once the butter has melted, slowly whisk in grits.  Reduce heat to low.  Whisk frequently for 10 minutes.

Your grits should be tasty and creamy.  Adjust seasonings or add cheese if you’d like.  I’ve used everything from pepper jack to goat cheese.  Experiment and enjoy!
